In the early 1960s, the decorator and furniture restoration company, Bobs Furniture Liquidators, had a client in need of some modern furnishings.
He had recently purchased a vintage bed and it needed to be completely restored.
So he enlisted Bobs to do a full interior restoration.
And that was what they did.
They made it look like a 1970s couch.
They also gave it a new coat of paint.
“When they said, ‘Get this done, we’ll send you the pictures,'” recalls Scott Johnson, a Bobs member who was working on the project.
The photos were so impressive, they were even featured in a television documentary on the company’s restoration efforts.
The finished bed is now part of a private collection in the Smithsonian.
Bobs bought the original bed in 1967 for $6,000, and it was donated to the National Museum of the American Indian.
The furniture has been on display in the museum’s library since 1993, but it was not available to the public until recently.
The Bobs team had to go to a dealer to get it shipped back to the museum, which cost $25,000.
The project took about four months.
“It took a lot of time, but we did it,” says Johnson.
“The original owner loved it.
He was really proud of it.
It’s a very unique piece of furniture.”
The restoration, done by Johnson, took about two months, but once it was finished, it was ready to go.
The original bed has been displayed at the National Gallery of Art for over 50 years.
“That was a big step in our lives,” Johnson says.
“I think that it’s one of the most unique pieces of furniture that we have.”

“If you want to see it, you can come and have a look,” Johnson said.
The company’s clients have included presidents, presidents of corporations, celebrities, and other notable individuals.
They’ve also given the furniture away for free to students, who can then display it on their walls.
“We’re trying to give back,” Johnson added.
Bols furniture restoration was also featured in the film The Furniture Guys, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
The documentary focuses on the story behind the furniture and shows how it was originally built in the early 1900s.
It was sold by the company in 1968 and has been in storage since then.
But now, the restoration project is on the books.
The restoration was completed in August and is scheduled to be complete in May 2019.
